USMNT World Cup buzz: Zack Steffen not on 26-man squad; Ethan Horvath, Sean Johnson and Matt Turner are cut

The roster of the United States Men’s National Team for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, to be announced Wednesday, is not expected to include goaltender Zack Steffen’s name on the list, sources tell CBS Sports. While the the announcement is set to take place Wednesday night at an event in New YorkCBS Sports understands that Ethan Horvath (Luton Town), Matt Turner (Arsenal) and Sean Johnson (NYCFC) should be on the list with Steffen shockingly excluded.

Steffen was the No. 1 goaltender for USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter for a long time. Limited for minutes at Manchester City, he moved to Middlesbrough on loan to pick up the pace ahead of the World Cup and even got a clean sheet on Monday night in a win at Blackpool. Still, it seems his performances weren’t enough for him to make the final roster.

The 27-year-old veteran has made 15 appearances for Boro this season, but only three for the national team in 2022. Due to the tournament taking place in the middle of the club season, teams will now be made up of 26 players compared to 23. Each team privately submitted a pre-list consisting of 35-55 players in October and they will have until November 14. at 1 p.m. ET to reveal the full 26-man squad.
